Over the weekend, a number of players were presented with awards for outstanding performances in the recent Football League and as a means of boosting their morale. The awards were sponsored by Subway, a healthy food outlet on the island.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony at the Scouts and Guides Ruthwill Auditorium, President of the Club, Bernard Wattley, told the players: “When we play, we do so to win but winning isn’t everything. It is also very important how we play the game and up to now you have played well. You did not win in your first attempt in the League but your placing third is to be highly commended.

“I am personally very proud of your performance. Having placed third, however, means that there is much room for improvement and I anticipate seeing tremendous improvement in the months ahead asyou seek to win the championship the next time around.”

President of the Anguilla Football Association, Raymond Guishard, encouraged the team to build on what it achieved in the first year of its performance. He pledged that his association would support the club’s executives and players and said they had a role to play in making it possible for football to be played throughout Anguilla and outside the island as well.

Colin Johnson, coach and representative of the Sports Directorate, speaking on behalf of Alkins Rogers, said the award ceremony demonstrated the commitment of the club to the development of football in Anguilla. He thought it was a commendable gesture for the club to reward its members who had worked very hard during the football season. He added that though a new club, it had had shown “the passion and spirit for the game… and had made football a joy to watch and to bring back the crowd once again.”

Among the awardees were Gavin Berridge, Best Striker; Derville Francis, Best Mid-fielder; Quamme Connor, Best Defender; Godwin Davis, Best Goal Keeper; Lesroy Benjamin, Most Goals Scorer; Shawn Duncan, Most Dedicated Player; and Denville Francis, Most Valuable Player.

The ceremony was chaired by Keithstone Graves, a consultant at Radio Anguilla.
Those on the Club’s Board of Executives are Bernard Wattley, President; Zulma Webster, First Vice President; Karen Webster, Second Vice President; Nicole Alleyne, General Secretary; Hubert Carter, Treasurer; Cora Benjamin, Public Relations Officer; and Shellicia Brooks, Floor Member.
