Digicel Sponsors Local Under 19 Warm-up For Training Camp

Under 19 cricket teams from Anguilla, neighbouring St Maarten and the British Virgin Islands, last week participated in the Leeward Islands Under 19 competition to select players for a training camp this weekend in St Kitts.

The matches played at the Ronald Webster Park were sponsored by Digicel. Since committing to the Anguilla Under 19s cricket team last year, Digicel has shown its support by outfitting the entire team in brand new practice and game uniforms that carry the Digicel logo. The players proudly wear their uniforms and the coaches appreciate Digicel’s long term commitment to the team.

“Our team did well and the matches were of great value for the further development of our young cricketers as these matches provide further experience and exposure for possible selection into the Leeward Islands Team,” stated Cardigan Connor, Cricket Development Officer. “In the past we have struggled with finding a long-term sponsor and we are glad that Digicel has partnered with us.”

Stephenie Brooks, Acting Country Manager, commented: “Digicel is pleased to be able to facilitate the playing of these matches and recognizes the integral part it plays in its support of the local Under 19 team.”

In the first match St Maarten defeated the hosts by 5 wickets. Batting first Anguilla slumped from 93 for 2 to 142 all out with Chesney Hughes, who opened the batting, scoring 80. Kelston Dormick picked up 3 for 20.

In the second match, Anguilla amassed a huge total of 382 for 6 declared against the British Virgin Islands thanks to Chesney Hughes’ boundary studded 157, Daniel Proctor’s 52 and Kelbert Walters’ 48. The visitors were let down by their fielding.

Heartbeat Radio aired the matches daily. Digicel and the Under 19 cricket team extends a very special thank you to Ras B for his lively commentary.
