Mr. Stott was speaking at a press briefing called on Tuesday, July 11, to hand over US$4,000 to Susan Webster, a leading member of the organising committee. He hoped that the money would provide well-needed funding for the 10th anniversary show.
The event, which normally jump starts the Summer Festival, will take place on July 29 at the Landsome Bowl Cultural Centre. Participants will come from Barbados, Columbia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Grenada, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Martin/St. Maarten, St. Vincent, St. Croix, Tortola, Trinidad, Venezuela, Jamaica, Honduras, Cuba and host island, Anguilla.
Susan Webster praised Cable & Wireless for being the pageant’s number one sponsor from the inception of the show. She said the money will be used to finance the publication of the magazine highlighting the show, cover the cost of trophies and cash prizes.
She said for the first time the show would feature three cartoon characters to entertain children. These will be Dora The Explorer, Sponge Bob and Mickey Mouse. The cartoon segment of the show will be from 7-9 pm following which the show would commence. There will be 15 contestants and despite all the extra activities, the price of the show will remain at $12. Webster stated that there would also be a High School dance group from California whose performing motto is “stop the violence.”
The show will be moderated by the 1998 Miss Ecstacy Queen, Lexanne Medford, of Grenada.
Alkins Rogers, who is associated with the show, commented that it is a very expensive event as the committee pays the airfares, accommodation for all the contestants and their chaperons. He was therefore grateful to Cable & Wireless for the sponsorship.
The cash prizes will be EC$5,000 for the winner; $1,500 for first runner-up; and $1,000 for third place. Trophies and other prizes will also be presented to the contestants.
It was disclosed at the press briefing that LIAT and American Eagle were providing special airfares for the contestants and that the management of the Anguilla Great House had agreed to provide free accommodation.
