According to newly-appointed Disaster Preparedness Coordinator, Elizabeth Klute, the gadgets, the size of a thumb, should be available within the next two weeks. They will be distributed to families by Cable and Wireless and the Department of Disaster Preparedness.

His Excellency the Acting Governor, Mark Capes, was present at the ceremony. “Each one of us must take disaster preparedness seriously,” he stated. “I am sure nobody will easily forget the scenes of devastation caused last year by Hurricanes Ivan and Wilma and closer to home, Hurricanes Luis, Lenny and Donna. We don’t know what is in store for us this hurricane season, but we do know that we are at risk and therefore we must prepare. And the better we prepare the easier will be the recovery if we do experience a hurricane.

“By funding the purchase of this equipment, Cable and Wireless is demonstrating that it does take the threat of hurricanes, and other disasters, seriously and is prepared to help others to prepare, which may in turn save precious lives. In the event of a disaster Cable and Wireless has also kindly agreed to provide accommodation for an international media centre and to provide antenna space for a national emergency radio system.

“In making this valuable contribution to disaster preparedness, Cable and Wireless Anguilla has demonstrated once again that it is a leader in terms of being a good corporate partner, playing a caring and responsible role for the betterment of the community at large. I commend Cable and Wireless and its senior management for all the support the company gives to so many worthwhile activities and projects in Anguilla, especially those aimed at supporting the youth of Anguilla, such as the Anguilla Tennis Academy.”

Just before presenting the cheque to Ms. Klute, Chief Executive of Cable and Wireless, Sutcliffe Hodge, spoke of the company’s commitment to disaster preparedness in Anguilla and the rest of the region. He said he had much pleasure in presenting the cheque to help safeguard the people of Anguilla during the hurricane season.
