It was a day with a mixture of squalls, heavy rain, low and high winds and lightning in which the two competing yachts – True North-4, manned by the CCB team and Stars and Stripes, manned by the NBA team, set out on the race. True North, which was lagging in the event, eventually sped up and scored the winning edge in just about 12 seconds.
CCB’s Captain, Myrna Sasso, commented: “Team work and determination contributed to our winning and recapturing the trophy. We had a team of 20. As I have said, we have customers who always want to join with us and that’s why we had more than the 18 crew members we were supposed to have had.”
Miss Sasso further said: “It was a good race and we at the two banks are good friends but it doesn’t matter whether it is 12 seconds, one second or half a second. The fact of the matter is that we won. We came from behind and we beat them.” She acknowledged that her team was “way behind, having had a bad start and delayed by a lack of wind.”
Romare Kelsick, speaking on behalf of NBA’s team, said they maintained a leading position in the race for a long time, but had made an error in failing to sail around one of the buoys as required. It was after they had to tack around the buoy that True North went ahead of them about a quarter to half a boat link.
The result of the race has put both teams in tied positions with scores of two wins each so far in the annual Battle of the Banks Race.
