The announcement was made by Chief Minister, Osbourne Fleming, in the House of Assembly on Monday, May 8.
He said the decision was made after the Government had looked at its financial position and the contributions being made by civil servants. “I am pleased to report on behalf of my colleagues that this Government has agreed to a further increase of 10% for all civil servants and all non-established workers effective the first of July.”
Opposition Member, Hubert Hughes, commented that he “fully concur with the Chief Minister awarding the civil servants 10% and I have nothing to debate on the matter. I think the cost of living in Anguilla is astronomical and if you want to keep civil servants, we have to at least sympathise with their lot.”
The pay increase for the government workers follows recent increases in salaries and allowances for Elected Members of the House of Assembly to the tune of 32. 9%. The increases have drawn a mixture of criticism and support among the general public.
