In keeping with the aims of the Health Authority of Anguilla to develop a cadre of persons to deliver quality service to all, six Care Assistants for the Elderly have now been trained to work at the Miriam Gumbs Senior Citizens Home and in the Primary Care Department’s community programme.

Three assistants will serve in each capacity.

They graduated at a ceremony held at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Wednesday afternoon, May 10. The graduates are Valda Weir, Jannet Lake, Teresa Richardson, Margaret Smith, Kezia Hughes and Susan Brooks.
Director of Nursing, Tatlin Fider, said the trained assistants were now in a position to provide better quality care for the inmates at the Home and for elderly persons in the community as well as other aspects of health care.
The course was conducted by Nursing Tutor, Agnes Brooks and covered the period January 17 to March 28. The training comprised basic skills for home-based care including beds baths, an understanding of vital signs, blood pressure and blood sugar checks, administration of incilin and exercises for the elderly.

“It was a comprehensive course, they learnt the rights and responsibilities of the care assistants and also the rights of the elderly,” Ms. Fider stated.

Chief Executive of the Health Authority of Anguilla, Dexter James, said: “We support and promote organisational development and training of staff, preparing ourselves for improving health care excellence.
“Very shortly we will be having a National Health Fund launched some time in 2007, so we want to ensure that our health care professionals are adequately trained, so that they can implement best practices in respect to the home. Yes, they have been doing an excellent job with respect to care of the elderly but, is it in keeping with international standards? So this training will prepare them for higher levels of responsibilities, allowing them to better take care of the patients at the home.”
