A brilliant Anguillian forensic science student, Takoma Carty, is gaining much academic success in England and has been the subject of a feature article in a leading British magazine, Prospects.

Takoma, 21, is the proud daughter of Jane Carty and Dennis Brooks. She is a student at Lancaster University in Preston, Lancashire, where she began studying for a Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Forensic Biology in September 2005. A former student at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School, she obtained six CXC subjects and went on to achieve three A-levels, thus equipping her for formal university studies.

“I was very impressed with the facilities at the University College of Lancaster,” Takoma told the British magazine, saying she had enrolled at the institution after finding the course information on the internet.

“University College of Lancaster seemed to have one of the best forensic departments in the UK so I was very keen to come here,” the Anguillian student was quoted as saying. “I visited the department during an open day in April 2005 and knew that I didn’t want to go anywhere else. I like Preston too – it’s a friendly place – even though I know it’s going to be colder than home. I came from a small country where most of the people employed in forensic science come from overseas. I hope to take my skills and expertise home with me and encourage others to take up the profession.”

Takoma’s studies are being privately financed. Her mother, Jane, visited The Anguillian on Tuesday this week to submit the information about her. “I am very proud of my daughter and I love her very much,” she said.
