The Board of Directors, Management and Staff of the Anguilla Electricity Company (ANGLEC) have been celebrating the 15th Anniversary of the organisation this week. Accompanied by Minister of Infrastructure, Kenneth Harrigan, they attended the morning service at the Church of God of Prophecy (Holiness) on Sunday, April 2, where Pastor Philip Gumbs and members of the congregation welcomed them.

Pastor Gumbs said he was pleased that the company had decided to mark the event by attending the service. “We are thankful that in our country secular organisations still see the value of having God as part of their celebrations, acknowledging Him as the source of success and protection,” he said.
Following the service, company’s officials and employees, led by Chairman of the Board, Everet Romney, and General Manager, Neil McConnie, attended a luncheon and presentation ceremony at Koal Keel Restaurant in The Valley. The function was chaired by Customer Service and Billing Supervisor, Jerome Roberts.

Mr. Romney traced the history of the development of electricity in Anguilla dating back to the days when a limited supply was provided at the old ice plant which was located in the vicinity of the Peoples’ Market. He spoke of the eventual privatisation of electricity and the many strides the company made over the years despite its challenges. He commended Mr. McConnie for his work and credited him for the success of ANGLEC.
Mr. McConnie joined Mr. Romney in giving a comprehensive background of the island’s electricity system and expressed appreciation for the efforts of past Board members and other personnel over the years.

Speaking in an interview with The Anguillian, Mr. McConnie said: “We are very proud that we have got this far. ANGLEC has gone through tremendous transformations and I think we got it right now. In 1991 there was much debate [about] whether ANGLEC should remain as a Government department or whether it should become a private company in partnership with another entity.
“The partnership continued for a short time until 1997 when it fell apart. In 1998 a decision was taken to privatise 51 percent of the company. That was reversed in 1999 and certain things were done to put ANGLEC on a firm footing and on reflection, today, we may have done the right thing. The company is now an entity of which we can all be proud.”
