ANNIVERSARIES: Edward & Pearl Connor Celebrates 50th Anniversary

“Well, you see what happen. I always used to say when a man carries a woman to the altar they make a pledge and this pledge is ‘for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness or in health, till death do us part.’ So whatever comes my way, I take it. I forgive and I forget. I believe that is what made our marriage last so long and I am a Christian woman.”

So said Pearl Connor as she rehearsed part of her marriage vows, taken at Bethel Methodist Church half a century ago, at the age of 22 years. She was speaking at her residence at Sandy Ground where a family get-together attended by mainly children and grandchildren was held on Monday evening, March 27.
“I get my husband to follow me and I follow him and that is how it is,” Mrs. Connor (formerly Hodge) added. “He has been a very caring family man, never leaving us in want of anything. We have six children, three girls and three boys.”

Her husband chimed in: “I have done my best for her. I love her and I always wanted someone to take care of me and she is doing so. I don’t think I will get married again,” he laughed.

Mr. Connor, who married his bride when he was 27, grew up in St. Kitts. He has been a sailor in Anguilla for many years before spending sometime in St. Thomas.

Teacher Bronte, one of their children, is the principal of Liz Pre-school. “I feel very proud of my parents and I thank them for my upbringing,” she told The Anguillian. “We are a Christian-related people and I am happy that they have lived to see this milestone of fifty years of marriage. Today, young couples are getting married and their marriage is not lasting for even five years so my parents are mentors for we young people.”
