Antoine Chapon

Chapon was born in Bordeaux, France, and is a self-taught painter who first started as a photographer. He sailed to the Caribbean in 1980 and four years later settled in St Martin where he has been living ever since. Since 1995 he has been working and living in his picturesque home, overlooking Cul de Sac Bay, which also serves as his gallery.
He first used watercolours but some of his work now uses oils. His work is defined by a personal technique comprising vibrant transparencies and deep shades.
In the current exhibition there are twenty originals in oils and watercolours and the remainder are giclee prints. The latter are produced with the continuous ink jet technology of an Iris printer and gives a high definition print that will last for one hundred years. It is printed on archival paper or canvas and the quality is exceptional.
Although Devonish Gallery has sold some of Chapon’s work for a few years this is the first exhibition of his work on the island. However, over the past fifteen years he has held several exhibitions in St Martin, Antigua, St Barths, the USA, Paris and Curacao.
