On Saturday evening, more than 80 persons got together in the library at Campus B for an evening of movies, popcorn and camaraderie. The movies “One Love” and “Hotel Rwanda” were shown and enjoyed by all. There were young people present who had been participants of the ‘Youth 2 U’ radio programme, ‘Brother to Brother Chat’ sessions, Oratorical Training, and Summer Youth Retreats.
One Love is a story set in Jamaica, about the daughter of a preacher whose church choir, with the daughter as the lead soloist, entering a competition organized by the local music promoter. She is engaged to be married to the organist who turns out to be a very jealous man when she becomes attracted to a Rasta, portrayed by Bob Marley’s son, Ky-mani Marley. He is also the member of a Reggae band which entered the competition as well. The story ends up with the fiancé turning into a bad guy setting up the Rasta as a druggie, which of course he wasn’t. He lands up in prison with the Rasta being free to follow his love bringing Christianity and Rastafarianism together.
Hotel Rwanda is a true story of the second genocide in Rwanda. It was filmed in Hotel Milles Colines, which is still open for guests in the capital Kingali. It is based on a book written by the UN representative at the time who tried to alert the authorities in Geneva as to what was going to happen. The manager of Hotel Rwanda risked his own life to harbour men, women and children who were afraid for their lives during the massacre.
Both movies were chosen for their themes of love (romantic love and love for humanity) and their black consciousness, The Movie Extravaganza was organised under the theme ‘Celebrating Youth, Black History and Love’ bearing in mind that this year’s Caribbean District’s theme is ‘Celebrate’ and February is Black History Month and the celebration of St Valentine’s Day.
