Marketing Manager for Digicel, Stephanie Brooks, said: “The beaches are one of Anguilla’s natural resources and I think it is important that we keep them clean not only for the tourists but for ourselves. We need to take care of them because we have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and it is our responsibility as residents to care them because if we do not, no one else will. I applause you, youngsters, for your effort and I am very happy that Digicel is able to support the beach clean up and the groups for their work.”
John Edwards, proprietor of Johnnos, the well-patronised restaurant at Road Bay, said he and Leroy Martinez started the beach clean up campaign some years ago. “It has been a struggle trying to keep it financed, but here now is Digicel which we thank very much for its sponsorship,” he stated. “I hope more companies doing business in Anguilla will do likewise to make the beaches look very clean and to be one of the best things happening for Anguilla.”

MacLean Webster ready to transport garbage

Mr. Edwards was also grateful to MacLean Webster of Island Harbour for providing and driving his truck to the beaches to remove the bags of garbage on Saturdays.
Mr. Webster said it was a pleasure for him to give his assistance to such a worthy cause. “When Leroy mentioned the beach clean up campaign to me, I got so much interested that I said I want to be a part of it,” Webster recalled. “I think it is one of the greatest things that can happen for Anguilla. It is our responsibility to keep Anguilla clean. As Miss Brooks said, it is not only for the tourists. It is for us and we need to keep all the beaches clean and I hope that the work will continue.”

The Fire Ants Football Team with others

Mr. Martinez, who presented the all girls Fire Ants Football Team with a check for US$265 on behalf of Digicel, commented: “I thank Digicel for their wonderful support and I am also grateful to the Fire Ants. These young people hold the record for having picked up the most bags of trash anywhere. Last year they cleaned up Shoal Bay and to their surprise, and mine, they picked up 92 bags of trash from that beach which supposedly is one of our cleanest beaches on the island. This time around, they picked up 53 bags of trash at Road Bay and we paid them five dollars a bag. This is to raise funds for their organisation.”
The Johnno’s Beach Clean-Up Campaign is being sponsored by Digicel over the next five months. The work is open to all youth groups on the island and registrations are at the Anguilla National Trust Office where there is a list of the beaches to be cleaned.
