No More Cargo At Blowing Point

The Executive Council has taken the decision to relocate all cargo operations to the Road Bay Port at Sandy Ground until a new cargo port at Corito is provided.

The Council acted on a recommendation from the Anguilla Port Development Programme Board which was appointed to oversee the implementation of what will be the island’s largest public sector project in the coming years.

The project, yet to be defined, will involve the upgrading of the Blowing Point Port to a ferry terminal and eventually with a commercial and tourism waterfront development. The plan is also to convert Road Bay Port to a marine tourism and fishing facility with the usual police, customs and immigration operations and to develop a modern and elaborate cargo port at Corito instead.
Meanwhile, the Government has allocated some two million dollars for carring out temporary improvements at the Blowing Point and Road Bay Ports later this year.

A release from the Chairman of the 17-member Anguilla Port Development Programme Board, Fritz Smith, said there were safety concerns at the cargo jetty at Blowing Point along with the increase in both passenger and cargo traffic.

At present a number of cargo vessels operating between Anguilla and St. Martin/St. Maarten, and in some cases boats bringing agricultural produce from other islands, usually call at the port with ferryboats in close proximity.

A meeting for all major stakeholders including residents, cargo operators, couriers, merchants, customs brokers and other interested persons was arranged for the Teachers’ Resource Centre on Thursday, February 16 to discuss the development.
