Race Against AIDS A Success

The Optimist Club of Anguilla has described its Third Annual Race Against AIDS as a success. The event, on Sunday, November 27, saw participants from Anguilla, Antigua, St. Martin, St. Barths, Nevis, Mexico and Sweden.

The starting point of the event was the Agricultural Department in The Valley. In the half marathon race to West End and back, the male winners were Saud Gomez of Mexico in first place (US$1,000); Dale Johanson of Antigua, second (US$500); Steve Duzanson of St. Martin, third (US$250); Daniel Leroux of St. Barths, fourth (US$100); and Emmanuel Cau also of St. Barths, (US$50).
The female winners of the half marathon were Latoya Joseph of Antigua, first; Kristin Kopec, Zoenk Kric and Rose Bernard of St. Martin who placed second, third and fourth respectively; and Wendy Brear of Nevis. The cash awards for these winning positions were the same as above.
Medals and trophies were awarded for the 5k and 10k races to the Tyre Shop at George Hill and to the Bethel Methodist Church at South Hill respectively. In the 10k race for male runners, 18 years and under, the winners were Justin Smith of Antigua, first and Floyd Gibbon of St. Martin, second. Adonyah Richardson of Anguilla was the only participant in the 19-35 years category, thus was recorded in first place. In the 36 years age category, the three winners were Maxor Mario of St. Barths and Roger Ritcher and Bo Johanson of Sweden.
In the 10k race for female competitors, the lone runner was Linda Blacket of Antigua in the 18 years and over category. In the 36 years plus age group, the winners were Mona Hienricks of Sweden, Jill Walker of Anguilla and Inger Karisson of Sweden.

The 5k male winners in the 12 years and under category were Carlton Gumbs of Anguilla, Tevin Aoxable of Antigua and Alex Bailey also of Antigua. In the 13-18 years category, the winners were Nashaine Johnson, Kion Lee and Neil Gumbs, all of Anguilla.
Three other persons in Anguilla, Carbinere Whyte, Andre King and Lesroy Benjamin were the winners in the 19-35 age group. There were two winners in the 36-plus category: Oswald Baptiste of Antigua and Steve Kaman of Anguilla.
In the 5k for female runners, all the winners were from Anguilla. Those winning the race in the 12 and under category were Jonica Richardson, Shadua Richardson and Julesha Connor. Winners in the 13-18 category were Kyla Freeman, Jaynese Othello and Jamella Benjamin. In the 36-plus age group, the winners were Michelle Bellers, Beth Smith and Tamara Capes.

There were a number of other persons who participated in the walk for which there were no awards as it was merely an awareness event in support of the Race Against AIDS.
