Fire Ants celebrate draw with Suriname
|
They placed second to the host country Suriname. Playing an attacking brand of football, the Fire Ants impressed the large crowds with their speed, spirit and discipline. They defeated the Netherlands Antilles 5 goals to 2 in the first game, drew 1 goal each with host country Suriname but went under zero to 1 against Dominica. Coach Colin Johnson attributed their defeat to Dominica to fatigue and injuries to major players.
Many players from Anguilla stood out and caught the eyes of most onlookers. Captain Jaynelle Lake was voted best striker, scoring 4 goals against the Netherland Antilles. Other outstanding players were Melesa Anderson, Melissa Carty, Keturah Caines and Shanella Browne. Khadeema Gumbs, the youngest player in the tournament, also gave a very good account of herself.
Coach Johnson was very proud of the team’s performance, but thought that with a little more endurance, and mental toughness, Anguilla will definitely make the final in the future. He has thanked all the supporters of the Fire Ants who contributed to making the tour a huge success, especially his management & coaching staff, and most importantly the Anguilla Football Association.
