The Anguillian
Dear Mr Editor
Rumours circulate in Anguilla readily, like in any other small community, and much of what you hear must be taken with a grain of salt.
But I have been reliably informed that a new school, catering especially to expatriate children (i.e white children), with four white teachers, was opened in the Sandy Hill area in Anguilla on Monday September 12 allegedly without meeting government’s requirements: no business licence, no work permits, no registration with the Education Department and no permission from the Land Development Committee to open a school in the Sandy Hill area or change the use of the building to a school building.
What is Anguilla coming to? Are there laws for some and not for others? Are some people above the law because of their colour? Are people who gained Anguillian privileges by being given belonger status here to work with us or to put us out of business? We do not want to start the BH (born here) CH (come here) discussion, but situations like this force us to remind some people that just like Americans have the right to revoke their green cards so too do we Anguillians have the right to revoke our belonger status.
Now please don’t get me wrong, Mr Editor, for we welcome those who come to build us up. But we cannot welcome those who come to break us down and destroy our efforts simply because they have more money than we do.
I wish that this was just a bad dream but, unfortunately, it is the truth. Government, this is the time to show that you value those who put you in power to protect their rights. This is just the beginning. We must stamp out anything that mirrors apartheid strategies immediately.
A very concerned citizen
