Queen's Relay Baton In Anguilla

The Queen’s Relay Baton for the XVIII Commonwealth Games arrived at Wallblake Airport in Anguilla on Thursday afternoon on a Winair flight from St. Kitts. This was followed by a welcome reception at which the Baton was received by Governor Alan Huckle and Acting Chief Minister Victor Banks.

The Baton was accompanied by four persons from Australia: Kate Brody, Brett Kennerlay, Damian Whitford, a policeman (acting as Asset Protector) and Will Salter.
On Friday, the Baton will depart the Anguilla Great House at 9:30 a.m. where it will be taken to Sandy Ground – Pump House. There Sir Emile Gumbs will deliver a historical perspective of the Salt Pond and Boatracing. The Baton will travel on the UFO, this year’s Champion of Champions winner, making a brief stop at Little Bay before arriving at Scilly Cay. From there it will proceed to Heritage Collection Musuem at about 2:15 p.m.
Other locations it will visit are the Fountain Cavern at 3:00 p.m. and Wallblake House at 3:45 p.m. The Baton will then travel to the Governor’s residence at 7:00 p.m. and remain there for two hours before returning to the Anguilla Great House.
On Saturday, August 20th, the Baton takes off from the James Ronald Webster Parkat 9:30 a.m. and continues through the island as follows: Queen Elizabeth Avenue, Wallblake Round-about, South Hill Methodist Church, Former CM Residence, Anguilla Trading Company, Long Bay Junction, Meads Bay – Malliouhana Hotel, West End School, West End (turn around point), Back Street, South Hill, Road School, Blowing Point Ferry, George Hill Junction via Jeremiah Gumbs Highway, Government House, entrance North Hill Road, Crocus Hill, Coronation Avenue, Caribbean Commercial Bank Junction, Rey Hill Junction, Central Christian School, J W Proctors, Mahogany Tree /Albert Lake Junction, Old East End School, Sandy Hill Round-about, Connell Cash & Carry, J W Proctors and will return to its take-off point at the Park 5:30 p.m. where refreshments and entertainment will be on hand (especially for the children).
The Baton will leave Anguilla on LIAT at 2:45 p.m. on Sunday August 21.
The XVIII Commonwealth Games will be held in Melbourne, Australia, March 15th to 26th, 2006. The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay is the world’s longest, most inclusive relay, uniting communities of the Commonwealth and enabling millions of people to join in celebrations for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. The Relay started from Buckingham Palace on Commonwealth Day, 14 March 2005 and on March 15, 2006, it will be carried into the opening ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games. The Queen’s Baton contains a special message from Her Majesty, which will be read at the opening ceremony. The Baton will travel more than 180,000 kms over one year and a day. It will travel through all 71 countries of the Commonwealth.
