The Social Security Board is the official sponsor of Miss Gumbs. The sponsorship is in keeping with the Board’s commitment to contribute to her athletic development.
Miss Gumbs left Anguilla for North Carolina on July 16 and will return to Anguilla on Saturday, September 3. She will be traveling to Helsinki from North Carolina on August 3 and will return there on August 15, 2005 to complete her training programme before coming back to Anguilla.
Social Security Board states that it is pleased to be able to afford Curlee this opportunity. “It is the Board’s desire to not only to provide sponsorship for Miss Gumbs to compete in overseas athletic meets, but to assist in all areas of her social development, in an effort to ensure that she continues to be a well-rounded individual – athletically and academically. This includes facilitating any programmes that would enhance and develop Miss Gumbs’ athletic ability so that she excels at the highest level of the sport,” a release from the Board stated.
The Board expressed best wishes to Miss Gumbs in her participation at the upcoming World Championships in Helsinki, Finland, and hopes that her two weeks of training, prior to the meet, would have a positive impact on her performance, enabling her to run a new personal best in the 100m and set a new national record, short of becoming a finalist or medalist in her event.
