The Good That Men Do Live After Them
|
By Atlin Harrigan’s Family
The family of the Late Atlin Noraldo Harrigan acknowledge and thank the people who stood by him and supported him in his political struggles during the early days of Anguilla’s secession from St.Kitts and Robert L. Bradshaw. The family also recognize and thank those who stood by him as he battled with his foes on the home front for democracy.

The late Atlin Harrigan

Thank you Mr. Colville Petty for your eloquent article in The Anguillian Newspaper “He Lives Within Our Hearts,” on Mr. Harrigan’s vision, his fight and struggle for freedom, for the development of Anguilla which we all enjoy today in abundance. If you had written this article thirty years ago Mr. Petty, you too would have been labeled a Bradshaw, you most likely would have been victimized and your mode of communication confiscated. Thank God that we can now speak the truth without fear or prejudice. It is never too late for the public to know the truth.
We would like to put on record our thanks to Her Majesty The Queen for appointing Atlin an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his dedicated service and honourable intentions to his country and fellowmen.
Sincere thanks and gratitude to the Government of Anguilla for naming the House of Assembly after Atlin Harrigan, and for honouring him with the first State funeral ever to be held in Anguilla. Regrettably, Atlin is not here to know his life and contributions have been recognized, however his family is grateful and very appreciative for all the kind words and acknowledgements of his contributions to Anguilla.
Atlin’s character and political career were assassinated because of his principles, his integrity and his honesty. He as well as his family suffered verbal and mental abuse. In 1984, he was vindicated when the person who assassinated his political career, brought about his own political assassination as a result of his “one mannism”. Atlin was vindicated when his brother won the seat in District One. He was vindicated when Teacher Albena and Victor Banks won the seats in Districts Three and Four respectively. He was vindicated when the Anguilla National Alliance brought this country to where he had visioned it. He was vindicated when the Honourable House of Assembly was named after him. He was vindicated when he was honoured with a State funeral. Today his family is honoured and also vindicated that Mr. Petty and the media have brought to light the history of one of the greatest men who led this country to freedom and prosperity.
The good that Atlin has done will live long after him. If only an angel could tell him “he lives in our hearts” how glad it would make his heart feel. His family say thanks, thanks….
