Dear Sir,
THE HUBERT HUGHES/
DAVID CARTY MATTER
In listening to the harangue by Mr. Hubert Hughes against Mr. David Carty in the House of Assembly on Tuesday in which my opinion numerous slanderous remarks were made, I have a question.
Mr. Hughes’ remarks were made before a Speaker had been elected and before members of the House had sworn thier oaths of allegiance. Therefore, I would assume the House was not yet in a formal sitting. If that was the case then the issue of privileged speech in which any member of the House can say what he wishes without fear of litigation was not in effect.
So if I am right, could Mr. Carty not sue Mr. Hughes for all the unsubstantiated slander that was heaped upon him?
Inquiring minds need to know.
