The former teacher, who resides at Pond Ground, End, is rallying well, despite some challenges to her health, and is blessed with many family members. They are her husband, former sea captain, James Leopold Richardson (Polo or Kish); 10 children, 37 grandchildren and 25 great-grand children.

Mrs. Richardson taught for 40 years at the Old East End Primary School and the renamed Morris Vanterpool Primary School and for four years at pre-school level. “I am grateful I was able to help children to get along in their education,” said Teacher Daisy who was trained in St. Kitts in 1952. “I am proud of the doctors, nurses, teachers and other professionals who passed through my hands. Many of them visit me at times to say thanks.”

She began teaching Standard 5 pupils at the age of 14 years.

A grateful Teacher Daisy said: “I thank God for the many years He has given me and every Sunday morning I go to church [at St. Augustine’s] to worship and praise Him.
Turning to her 86-year-old husband, seated nearby, she commented: “Oh, he takes care of me. God gave him to me for a purpose and we are taking care of ourselves with His help and that of our children.”

They were married in April 1943. The following year Polo began a long sailing career as captain of a number of Anguillian-owned sloops. He retired from sailing in 1983 thus having an opportunity to devote more time to home life and family.
