The Island Harbour Primary School has embarked on a reading programme to improve the performance of the pupils in this area of learning.

In order to achieve success in this endeavour, the newly-appointed Principal, Ornette Edwards-Gumbs, and her staff are looking for volunteers to contribute books for the programme.

So far, they have succeeded in securing the assistance of Kathleen Butterfield of Habor Lights, an accommodation facility in the area, whose guests have donated fifty books.

Ms. Butterfield expressed delight in being able to influence her guests to contribute books to the school. “Harbor Lights is a small inn with only four rooms so imagine what we would accomplish if other hotels and inns were willing to participate in the programme,” she commented.

Another book donor is Annie Radke, an American student at Colby College in Maine, who was involved in the school’s reading programme for four weeks and has been sending books to the Island Harbour School since then.

The principal is grateful to those persons who have responded to the initiative and hopes that more persons would contribute to the programme.

Books can be sent to her directly at the school or at Harbor Lights in care of Kathleen Butterfield, P. O. Box 181.
