A gift of five computers has added significantly to the information technology learning process at the Island Harbour Primary School where students are doing well in their technical work.

The computers, along with five custom-made desks, were donated to the school by Griffin and Johanne Webster, residents of Island Harbour. The husband and wife couple, who have been assisting in the teaching of information technology to the students, were thanked at the presentation ceremony at the school on Monday this week.

The Principal, Ornette Edwards-Gumbs, expressed thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Webster “for their hard work and dedicated service to the school.” She stated that they “had gone beyond the call of duty with their time, services and resources” to assist the school.

“The computers will be used by our pupils and teachers to help them develop their skills so that they would be able to perform effectively in a society where technology is increasing,” she added.

Mr. Webster said he was one of the first students at the school when it opened at Island Harbour and described it as a pillar of the community. He pledged his support for the school and its pupils and was happy that he and his wife were in a position to make the donation. He said the computers would provide opportunities for the children to be exposed to basic information technology. Later, they would be able to develop their skills when they enter the Comprehensive School and eventually the workplace.

He commended the teachers for their hard work and was pleased to be associated with them in their endeavours.

Education Officer, Rhonda Connor, thanked the Webster couple for their thoughtful gift and “for their time and expertise which they have given to the school.” She urged the students that in appreciation of the donation they should make a conscious effort to work even harder in using the computers. She noted that in the information technology tests the Island Harbour School had done very well and she hoped that with the additional computers the students would do better.

She encouraged them to use the computers so that when they began attending the Comprehensive School they would find their work easier.

Education Officer, for Curriculum Development, Rosena Brooks, conducted a session with students on the use of computers. Following that, the children were taken to the computer room where they did some practical work under the guidance of Mr. and Mrs. Webster.
