After seven and a half years of service in the Attorney General’s Chambers, Chanelle Petty-Barrett has resigned from the Anguilla Public Service.

Mrs. Petty-Barrett began her legal career at the Attorney General’s Chambers in July 1997 after attaining her Bachelor of Laws Degree with Honours from the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill, Barbados and her Legal Education Certificate from the High Wooding Law School in Trinidad. She held the position of Crown Counsel for six and a half years and in January 2004, was promoted to the post of Senior Crown Counsel in charge of criminal matters.

Mrs. Petty-Barrett provided sterling service to the Government and people of Anguilla. She is reputed to have provided sound and timely legal advice to various departments of government. Her opinions were always trusted, as one was assured that they were based on thorough research of the pertinent issues. Her many court appearances as a prosecutor and her tenacious representation of government in civil and constitutional cases earned her the respect of many for her competence, fairness and integrity.

Forever striving to take her legal career to the next level, Mrs. Petty-Barrett, while in the public service, pursued and attained her Master of Laws degree from the University of London.

Always humble, always smiling, she endeared herself to many both personally and professionally by the manner in which she conducted herself. She was the ultimate professional, forthright yet courteous, always helpful, always committed to the task at hand. Her resignation strikes a blow to the Attorney General’s Chambers specifically and to the public service generally, as her exemplary conduct, her work ethic and the diligence and pride taken in conducting daily tasks are all characteristics that all public servants would do well to emulate.

Unfortunately, Mrs. Petty-Barrett’s resignation means that the Attorney General’s Chambers has lost the two most senior Anguillians in just over one year, as her predecessor, Mr. Stanley Reid, left the Chambers in October 2003 to take up the post of Permanent Secretary, Public Administration. The departure of both individuals has raised concern in some quarters. The concern appears to be warranted as they were both well known and respected for their legal knowledge and skills.

Mrs. Petty-Barrett will continue her legal career at the well-respected firm of Keithley Lake & Associates where she will offer her services as an Attorney at Law to the general public. She views this as another opportunity to challenge herself to reach higher and she looks forward to serving her country in another capacity.

Head of Chambers, Mr. Keithley Lake, commented that his firm considered itself very fortunate to have an Anguillian lawyer of such high scholastic aptitude and legal ability. He looked forward to her having every success at the firm and was happy that she had chosen to serve there. Mr. Lake noted that both Mrs. Cora Hodge and Mrs. Petty-Barrett were sterling local lawyers whom the firm was happy to welcome.

The Anguillian wishes Mrs. Petty-Barrett the best in her latest career move and looks forwards to her continued sterling service to the people of Anguilla.
