Cable And Wireless Again Big Sponsor Of ALHCS Sports Day |
Cable and Wireless in Anguilla has been the main sponsor of the Inter-House Athletic Competition of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School for the sixth consecutive year.
A cheque for US$3,500 was presented to the Principal of the School, Darwin Hazell, by the company’s Chief Executive Sutcliffe Hodge on Monday, three days before the competition. The presentation was made at a press briefing at which other representatives of the school were present. They were Teacher Lanny Hobson, House Master of Maroon House; Tameika Fleming of Form 6A; Captain of Maroon House and Nekyra Rogers, Form 5 Maroon House.
Mr. Hodge made the point that Cable and Wireless was engaged in funding various sporting activities in the Caribbean region involving youth. He noted that there was a need for everybody to pay attention to young people at a time when there was restlessness among them as well as the early onset of medical complications and other ills.
“One of the benefits of sports is team-working,” he went on. “Increasingly, in order to fully participate in the rapidly emerging global economy, it is important that we prepare our young people to be team players both in their social, school, and professional lives,” he noted.
Mr. Hodge added, “We need to ensure that we develop a workforce for the future that is disciplined, energetic and competitive but not competitive at any price. You want to be competitive, but you want to make sure that it is done with certain morals and values being the cornerstones of your quest to achieve success and excellence.”
Mr. Hodge challenged the Department and Ministry of Education to encourage young people to engage in athletics on a competitive level year-round. He pointed out that such involvement would enable them to achieve certain values and disciplines that would take them very far through life.
He added that it was with great pride that Cable and Wireless was sponsoring the Sports Day activities and pledged that the company would continue its commitment to the school and its students.
Mr. Hazell thanked the company on behalf of the staff, students and the Board of Governors of the school for its generous assistance. He acknowledged that Cable and Wireless had made other financial contributions to the school over the years whenever a need arose, and he was particularly pleased with the development of a close working relationship. He said the money would be used to provide medals and other awards for the athletes among other expenses.
The sponsors of each of the competing houses were Highway Car Rental, Tripple K Car Rental, The Anguilla Printers and Summerset Car Rental.
