Courtney Devonish has produced what is regarded as a masterpiece Birth of a Nation Strong sculpture depicting part of the history of Anguilla.

The sculpture is carved from the old Mahogany Tree which once towered over the crossroads at Albert Lake’s premises in the Quarter. The tree, which fell in 1971, was a favourite meeting place and was perhaps over 300 years old.

A note from Mr. Devonish states: “Like the island’s people, Birth of a Nation Strong symbolizes the fight for survival dating back to the days of the Arawaks. It exhibits the strength of the island’s people including their determination to break away from St. Kitts-Nevis and their leadership in stimulating the growth and development of Anguilla.”

The sculpture is located at the reception area of the Social Security Office in the James Ronald Webster Building. It was unveiled by Minister of Finance Victor Banks at the Third Annual Walter G. Hodge Memorial Anguilla Day Lecture at the House of Chandeliers.
