A Young Anguillian Doctor
|
A proud Anguillian young woman has qualified as a Doctor of Pharmacy in the United States of America. She is Erica S. Fleming daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walton Fleming of Lower South Hill was awarded her Doctorate degree on May 10th, 2003.
On completion of Third Form at the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School in 1992, she went on to continue her studies in England at Queens College where she completed her GCSE and A’level Exams. After graduation in 1996, she returned to Anguilla where she was a substitute teacher in the Math Department at the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School. She began her studies at Howard University in Washington D.C. by entering into the pre-pharmacy undergraduate programme in 1997 and continuing into the School of Pharmacy in 1998. During her time at Howard, she earned recognition for her scholastic achievements and was recognized on the Dean’s List in 1997 and 1998. Dr. Fleming is now a graduate of Howard University College of Pharmacy in Washington D.C. where she completed the 6 year Pharmacy Doctorate program.
A medical career has been Dr. Fleming’s passion from early on. A love of the sciences coupled with her desire to influence outcomes of patients and the need for medication and disease awareness especially in the areas of diabetes and cardiovascular health, prompted her to choose pharmacy as a career with patient education as her focus. With this goal in mind she intends to seek further certification as a diabetes educator and educator in cardiovascular health disorders.
Two years of Dr. Fleming’s education was financed by the Government of Anguilla and the remainder was privately financed by her family.
In addition to her scholastic pursuits Dr. Fleming was a member of the Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel Choir. Her love of singing and the exposure she gained as a member of this nationally renowned choir inspired her to start The Anguilla Foundation of the Arts, which is a Non Profit Organization aimed at increasing the awareness of the arts in the youth of Anguilla. In December 2002 she spearheaded and conducted the first annual vocal workshop with a cross section of the Albena Lake Hodge School Choir and several other young singers from different youth choirs on the island. Accompanied by three other members of the Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel Choir she presented the students in an accapella concert entitled “With a voice of Singing”.
Dr. Fleming’s success was driven by her desire to obtain an education that would equip her with the knowledge to contribute to the Anguillian community. As such, she looks forward to returning home and contributing to the Anguillian health care system.
