Senior Opposition Member in the Anguilla House of Assembly, Hubert Hughes, proudly accepted the keys to a top-of-the-line US$46,000 V8 Sequoia Jeep, from Chief Minister, Osbourne Fleming, on Monday afternoon, June 23. Just minutes earlier at a press briefing at Mr. Fleming’s office, Mr. Hughes, responding to public criticism, issued a statement denouncing suggestions that the vehicle was a deal in which he was “bought and silenced by the Government.”

The expansion of the Wallblake Airport was heralded by the government of Anguilla and indeed the affluent jet setting tourists are a welcome addition to Anguilla. Corito was sacrificed but the government had set in motion a plan for the redevelopment of the area. They were planning on relocating the major wharf from Sandy Ground to Corito but the financial cost continues to be insurmountable, hence the move is not in the foreseeable future.

Dear Sir,
BACK TO WELL WATER
I am writing to The Anguillan in hopes that there was an error made in the news item of 13 June concerning the distribution of water. The article quotes Mr. Larry Franklin as stating that,“…Unaccounted For Water (UFW) was about 70% of water purchased…” and that “…theft of water [is] estimated at 50% of the total water purchased.”

I wanted action on recommendations long made in a number of reports. I wanted outreach programmes to get right to the young people who are not attracted to meetings in cold concrete rooms.

With the steady increase of the number of inmates at Her Majesty’s Prison in Anguilla, the need has become greater for the training of officers who deal with them on a day to day basis and to maintain the governing rules and conduct at the institution. It is with this in mind that a course was held over the past four weeks and was extended to other participants from the Immigration and Probation Departments.
