CELEBRATION OF YOUTH

Thank You And Farewell →

After almost four years, the time has come for me to move on. This, my final column, is difficult to write as there are many emotions involved as well as an overwhelming feeling of nostalgia and reflection. Nat Hodge, editor of The Anguillian, and my boss for the past three years, instructed me that I had to write a farewell column.

Staff and some students at WISE

Wow!! WISE is an amazing programme and I am kicking myself for not having gone sooner to give the public a bird’s eye view of the great things the staff and students are doing. Once again, as she has done many times before, Janine Edwards gave me the idea to contact Gabriele Klaren, WISE Coordinator.

Keep In Touch With Friends →

Shawn in the middle with the ATA Tennis Stars

With the advent of amazing websites such as MySpace, Hi5 and Facebook, it has become extremely easy to stay in touch with friends. Not only are these programs great for keeping tabs on current friends, but they are incredible in terms of reconnecting with old friends and acquaintances as well as forging new friendships.

The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth; 5

In The United States During Election →

On Tuesday, November 4, at 9pm, I decided to go to sleep. It was not necessary to stay awake to watch the election unravel before my eyes as it was obvious all along that Obama would win. My travels to the states were not to be present for the election, but for other personal reasons.

Young People Must Vote →

Obviously there is a huge buzz around now with the presidential election coming up in just a few days. In my lifetime, this has been the most important election I have ever seen and because of it, there is much being said about it all over the world. It seems that everyone is glued to the TV screen and checking online articles about the candidates, the polls and early voter results. Living abroad for so many years, I have always found that the majority of people never fully understand the political system in the United States as it is very complex.

It Is Good To Be Home →

There is so much to say about the recent trip to Pune, India, for the Commonwealth Youth Games and I have no idea where to begin. India is an overwhelming country full of tradition, culture and much history. Our two week journey was definitely one of the most eye opening experiences for most likely the entire delegation and something we will never forget.

Celebration Of Youth - In Awe →

As readers will see in this week’s edition of The Anguillian, Reading Recovery celebrates ten years of success in Anguilla. When the celebratory event was announced, I promptly let Nat Hodge know that I would be happy to cover it. From the beginning of the ceremony until the end, the crowd and I were all awe-struck from the proceedings. Reading Recovery in Anguilla is obviously a strong programme that is working and paying dividends to many children who desperately need the extra attention. To say it bluntly, and without hesitation, teachers are the best people on the planet! They make the world go around. Behind every success, every person, every professional, there was a teacher who gave him or her the confidence and tools to make it. Moreover, can you actually imagine how it would feel in today’s world not knowing how to read? It would be tough to make it.

"Dear Parents" →

Dear Parents:

So here it is upon us. Another glorious and hope-filled school year has dawned amidst the rain and unwanted threat of Hurricane Ike. Yet, the wonderful rain and new scholastic year are both inherently paralleled with the hope of new beginnings that will end up with successful outcomes. Summer is finally over and life is slowly getting back into the swing of things.

CELEBRATION OF YOUTH Working With Youth Is Great! →

Every year for the past three, I have made a trip to New York to teach tennis for a week, among other things. If the faithful readers recall, an article was published this time last year detailing one of those trips. So, this article is once again being written from Bridgehampton, New York, from the library of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Bronfman Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Bronfman have been faithful visitors to Anguilla for many years now and indeed love the island and its people. For that reason, Mr. Bronfman has been a monumental figure in the design and development of the Anguilla Tennis Academy. Mitch Lake, Founder and President of the ATA, has spoken with him on many occasions and has served as a great inspiration to Mr. Lake and his dreams.

Celebration Of Youth -Golf Programme →

Catalina Hawley, one of the main organizers of the 1st Annual Anguilla Golf Classic, sent me an invitation to attend the various festivities surrounding this fundraising event for the Teacher Gloria Omololu Institute. As readers will see in this week’s edition of The Anguillian, there is an article that describes in detail the event as well as highlights various sponsors, organizers and awardees. Once again, like other golf events in the past, there was an outpour of people who not only played but many sponsors who generously gave as well. The Institute is well publicized locally and there would hardly be anyone who has not heard of it. Yet, in reading through the literature given out at the various events, it became more apparent that there is more to this place than just a private school.

Tremendous Activity →

It has been three weeks since this column was last published due to fact that I have been overwhelmingly busy with the 13th Annual Anguilla Tennis Academy Summer Camp. It has been a tremendous three weeks with more than 200 children playing tennis everyday. It is always such a large operation to do any summer programme yet, at the end of it all, it is always very fulfilling to see that students have improved at such an exponential level. It has also been obvious that other programmes have been in full swing and highly successful as well.

Golf Programme →

This week there is one more addition to the summer line-up for children’s activities. Anguilla Junior Golf is dedicated to providing young people of all backgrounds an opportunity to develop, through golf and character education, life-enhancing values such as honesty, integrity and sportsmanship.

Improving The Father And Son Relationship →

Meetings are scheduled and the ball is rolling. The wait is almost over. Throughout this week and next I will almost be finished with compiling information for all the options the children will have for this summer. Just to give a little taste, there are many programmes happening this summer such as a marine camp by Junior Fleming, table tennis, football, cricket, tennis, the annual Library programme, the Anguilla Youth Sailing Club, Vacation Bible School and more.

Reading Recovery →

Before starting with the subject at hand, I want my readers to share in expressing regards to the family of Teacher Art Egel. Affectionately known as Teacher Art, in my opinion, he is an icon in Anguilla and one of the most loved persons to ever work in the education system.

American Eagle And Reading Comprehension →

Unfortunately this week there is nothing to report about summer options for the youth as I have not yet received responses from the multiple e-mails that have been sent. Yet, in submitting an article this week for The Anguillian, it was quite simple to find a topic suitable for this edition of Celebration of Youth.

Honour Thy Mother And Father →

An apology is due to the readers of Celebration of Youth for not having published last week’s edition. It was long overdue, but I travelled to the USA to visit my mother and just returned this week. It had been almost two years since my mother and I had seen each other. Needless to say, it was a sweet homecoming.

Come Celebrate With Us →

It has been written before that I try not to write too much about the ATA in this column and it seems as if I might be contradicting myself lately. The thing is, this is a very exciting time for the board of directors and staff of the tennis academy because if one were to see in this week’s edition of The Anguillian, the doors to the facility will finally open to the public on May 23. A couple of weeks ago, Celebration of Youth was about the ATA summer camp. Unfortunately, many summer programmes are still in the development process so it has been difficult to publish anything about different options this year as yet.

Central Christian School Has The Support It Needs →

It was an exciting weekend, especially on April 26 with the holding of the National Sports Awards and the Central Christian School Charity Golf Tournament. Many have read in this column that the support of the wider community, and especially the expatriate community, is vital for meagre initiatives to take shape.

Summer Break Is Approaching →

It always seems so far away, but when I start to receive calls about the Anguilla Tennis Academy’s Annual Summer Camp, it becomes clear that the summer break is upon us. Like in the past, this column will begin to highlight certain programmes in which children can participate and it is necessary to begin this process now as many programmes have a limit.
