Dear Sir:

In regarding the letter dated March 24, 2006, written by visitors to Anguilla, about the insulting and embarrassing encounter while strolling on one of Anguilla’s public beaches, some issues come to mind. Investors who are given permission to create a successful, multi-million dollar project on our island are entitled to safe, clean and secure beach areas for guests.

ENJOYING THE BEACHES

My husband and I first came to Anguilla in the early 1970’s. The first paved road had just been laid and the only electricity on the island was produced by owner operated generators. We fell in love with every inch of it – the atmosphere, the beaches and as everyone who comes here does, with the Anguillian people themselves.

A LETTER OF GRATITUDE

After sampling many islands in the Caribbean, my wife and I long ago decided that Anguilla was our favourite and we have been regular visitors for close to twenty years.
During our most recent stay in mid-February, my wife became ill and it was necessary to organize a medevac (medical evacuation) back to our local hospital in New Jersey.

Dear Editor,

BEACH POLLUTION AT RENDEZVOUS BAY

We awoke Sunday morning to a fleet of 16 sailboats anchored below our house in Rendezvous Bay. These boats with home ports as far away as Rio de Janeiro and as nearby as Marigot, were here for this year’s MoonSplash. Our daughter, home from college for spring break had come home during the wee hours after enjoying Bankie’s annual bash.

The following letter sent to the Chief Minister’s Office, by the West End concerned group, was copied to The Anguillian for publication.

We are a small, but vigilant, group of concerned citizens of Anguilla and in particular of the West End community. Over the past several months we have found ourselves sharing grave concerns in regards to certain activities affecting our community and hereby wish to bring them to your attention so that you could address urgently.

First Impressions – last longest!

This heading is a universally accepted truth! It is also true to say that the future prosperity of Anguilla, and indeed most Caribbean islands, is heavily dependent upon the tourist industry. This being the case I thought your readers might be interested in hearing about my first impressions when my wife and I arrived on Wednesday of this week.

Dear Mr. Editor:

UNWARRANTED ATTACK ON IWANDAI GUMBS

I was appalled and incensed by the unwarranted attack on the person of radio personality Iwandai Gumbs by Opposition Member Hon. Hubert Hughes in the Anguilla House of Assembly on Tuesday, 21st February.

Since the start of the year the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Anguilla has had to address several life-threatening medical conditions related to motor vehicle accidents, gunshot wounds and lacerations. This is according to a press release issued by the Health Authority of Anguilla.

GIVE UP THE GUNS

I am of the opinion that if someone does not speak out against the gun-slinging here, the rocks will cry out. Everywhere you go among Anguillians, the question is being asked – “Lord what Anguilla is coming to?” A few years ago I could sleep in my home with doors and windows open, day and night, now I am afraid to stay inside with them closed.

PEOPLE NEED TO
TALK TO THE POLICE

How in the name of the law when something happens in an area where there are houses and people that no one can see or hear anything? Such seems to be the case in Anguilla these days when a crime is committed.

Anguillians should know that during a meeting some years ago, that Hon. Osbourne B. Fleming held with Anguillians in New York, yours truly made the suggestion that the Government of Anguilla should strive to become more transparent, and seek to provide timely and accurate information to Anguillians on and around issues that affect their daily lives; as well as to create a public forum to give Anguillians a pro-active voice whereby they could express their opinions, and seek re-dress on issues and concerns.

Please allow me to make mention of an observation which I find very unpleasant and seems to be very common. One must admit that Anguilla is a beautiful little island and a place of relaxation, where ‘Tourism’ is our main engine of economic growth. When visitors come to these shores they are interested in seeing the culture, or ‘way of life’ of the local people.
