Dear Sir:

STAY CLEAR OF DIRTY POLITICS

When I received my copy of The Anguillian in St. Thomas last week, I was happy to read a statement by Ms Anne Edwards, a former Deputy Principal at the Comprehensive School, regarding her forthcoming electioneering campaign in Road North.

Poisoning Of Animals

The Editor
The Anguillian

Dear Sir

We write in support of the recent Letters to the Editor regarding the poisoning of animals in Anguilla. As with all issues there are two sides to the story: On one side is the owner of goats or sheep who perceives dogs as a threat to his/her livestock; on the other side is the innocent pet owner who becomes victim of a nasty and unmerciful crime. In other cases poisoning is used to dispose of unwanted animals. All too often our membership and, in particular, our veterinary professionals have seen the painful results of poisoning of animals and in many cases are helpless to save them.

Cost Of Living Too High

The Editor
The Anguillian

Dear Sir:

COST OF LIVING
TOO HIGH

Anguilla is still perhaps in its embryonic stages of development, but I find it is a very expensive island to live in. The salaries and wages being paid in the public and private sectors cannot measure up to the increased cost of basic food items and various services. The latest increase in telephone and other telecommunications services only add to the growing hardship confronting the people of the island. There is a need to increase the take home pay of workers, but at the same time one wonders how this could be possible when the economy is in shambles.

Traditional Boats On Stamps Process Needs to Be Reviewed

By: Prof. Yinka G. Lloyd Stanford New York

As an educator and an Anguillian with a New York rising, I welcome the documentation of Anguilla’s marine history so that “the younger generation in Anguilla will be given an opportunity to learn more about the traditional sea-faring life of the island when a new definitive issue of postage stamps is released on June 10.” On behalf of the family of my late paternal grandfather Mr. Richard James Lloyd (Roaches Hill), and in his memory, I would also welcome a fair and reasonable process for the inclusion of “traditional boats on stamps” for “these boats, which are no longer in existence.”
To be more specific, I would like to know who made the final selection, and what determined the criterion for inclusion on the “traditional boats on stamps.” Why were the “Lady Lloyd” and the “May Lloyd” excluded from the documentation of the “Traditional Boats on Stamps?”

Drunk Or Careless Drivers?

The Editor,
The Anguillian

Dear Editor:

DRUNK OR CARELESS DRIVERS?

I have been a resident in Anguilla for the past couple of years and have witnessed with much interest the rapid growth in the number of vehicles on the island. I am not being funny when I say that the vehicles now here outnumber the 1967 population which was then said to be 6,000 souls.

Dear Editor,

LATE SHOWS AT LANDSOME BOWL

It has come to my attention that it would be a good thing to comment on last weekend’s performances at the Landsome Bowl Cultural Centre.
Both nights they had a sell-out crowd with terrific performances given by the artistes that were the main attraction.

OTHERS SHOULD SHARE THE PRAISE

I am writing in response to the letter of Mr. Eric Martineau in last week’s edition.

Statistics Office
Government of Anguilla

The Anguillian

May 21, 2003

Dear Editor

I would like, by way of your newspaper, to thank all those business people who have cooperated with the Statistics Office by completing and returning their annual business survey forms. People who complete and return their forms are truly good corporate citizens. They contribute to the publication of accurate economic information for all and lower the cost of the statistics programme by reducing the time taken in following up with those who do not complete their forms as promptly. This year has proved to be the most successful to date since the survey started back in the 1980s.

I AGREE WITH SOROPTIMISTS

The Editor

Dear Sir:

I AGREE WITH
SOROPTMISTS

Permit me space in your well-read paper to say that I cannot agree more with the Soroptomists who found something wrong about tiny tots (6-8 years old) being put on stage recently in a pageant show. I think this was an ill-advised performance and an unnecessary stress on the minds and bodies of these tender-age girls who should be otherwise positively directed at this early age. I see nothing cultural in that activity.

BUILD A BRIDGE

The Editor,
The Anguillian

Dear Editor:

BUILD A BRIDGE
In recent days I was unable to drive through the Queen Elizabeth Avenue because of the deep and wide settlement of water in the hollow area of the road. We do not often get the amount of rain in Anguilla and the Valley area to cause this type of flooding, but when it does happen, it becomes a nuisance to every motorist crossing the area.

Dear Sir:

LET’S GET ON WITH WALLBLAKE AIRPORT

I was pleased to read that plans are well underway for the expansion of Wallblake Airport. It is high time that this development work get started not just to facilitate one particular airline which is pulling out its smaller aircraft, but as part of the general development of the island and the tourist industry.
