HMS Portland arrived on island on Monday 24 September and immediately the crew set to work with projects designed to assist Anguillians in many aspects of their lives.

This week Temenos Anguilla, which includes Temenos Golf Club and Flag Luxury Properties Anguilla, made two presentations in aid of youth and community development. Media representatives were invited by Director of Public Relations, Arnie Hodge, to the handing over ceremonies.

On Monday, September 24, Commanding Officer Mike Utley, Captain of the HMS Portland, spoke at a press conference at the Royal Anguilla Police Force Headquarters at 10:15 a.m. He was accompanied by Dan Harding, an officer in training, as it is common for such a person to be able to understand the role of a Captain in the Royal Navy.

A special service to commemorate the opening of the Legal Year was held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church in The Valley on Thursday morning, September 20. It was followed by a Guard of Honour drawn up outside the High Court and inspected by Resident Judge, Madam Justice Janice George –Creque.

At their regular tripartite meeting on Wednesday this week, Police, Immigration and Customs officials from Anguilla, French St. Martin and Dutch St. Maarten discussed various matters of mutual interest including the issue of crime, the commonalities they find in the occurring offences and ways and means of dealing with the situation.

Well-known Anguillian Senior Social Worker, Clive (Frankie) Smith, is the proud winner of the prestigious Chevening Scholarship which will enable him to study for a Master of Science degree in Social Development at the University of Wales in Swansea. Anguillian fishermen travelling to St. Martin on their fishing boats and other persons from Anguilla operating passenger or pleasure vessels there must have the necessary documentation to the identify the nationality of their boats. If they fail to comply, they run the risk of being fined 600 Euros by the French Coast Guard.

The Anguillian decided to follow up with its Director, Mr. Lenox Proctor, so that the Anguillian public could be more informed about this new department and its initiatives.

As the Stoney Ground Primary School observed its 30th Anniversary, parents, teachers and students were told that it was one of the best built schools in Anguilla and that over the past three decades the structure had remained in excellent shape.

The Royal Anguilla Police Force, in partnership with the Education Department, is again conducting a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) course in another three of the island’s primary schools namely The Valley, Morris Vanterpool and Island Harbour Primary.

As is customary, the month of October is Literacy Month observed in all eight territories of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) which include Anguilla.

HMS Portland, one of the most advanced ships in the Royal Navy will anchor off Road Bay at 0700 on 24 September 2007.

On September 27-28 at the House of Chandeliers, Anguilla will see its very first National Conference on Youth and Development. The slogan for this important event is “Promoting Youth Involvement in Governance – The Future is Now.” This youth conference is being conducting by the Department of Youth and Culture under the auspices of the Ministry of Social Development and is being spear-headed by its Director, Mr. Lenox J. Proctor.
