Illegal drugs, with an estimated street value of some three million Eastern Caribbean dollars, have been destroyed by police in Anguilla. Personnel from the Drugs and Firearms Task Force and the Criminal Investigation Department set the contraband afire on the compound of Police Headquarters in The Valley on Tuesday afternoon, July 4.

The usual calm Sunday aura was pleasantly broken by a splash of colour and creativity evoked by Miss Charla Connor - young, fashion designer, enthusiast and daughter of the soil.

The Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) Annual Student Track and Field Championships take place in St Lucia on July 21 and 22 with some 20 countries competing. The cultivation of illegal cannabis in Anguilla appears to be a growing headache for local law enforcement authorities. Early last week, police seized over 100 matured plants growing in pots from a bush area in South Hill. By Friday of that week June 23rd, the Drugs & Firearms Task Force of The Royal Anguilla Police Force found larger quantities of the drug when it carried out a joint operation with CID and The Dutch St. Maarten Police Helicopter and Crew in an island wide search.

Last week, a two -day workshop was held as a continuation of the Overseas Countries and Territories Strategic Planning Project that was introduced here three months ago. Franklyn Michael, Project Manager was in Anguilla to hold the workshop and a follow up meeting with the committee.

Thirty members from the Youth to Youth Club and twelve parents enjoyed a three-day simultaneous workshop on issues surrounding HIV/AIDS and other social issues. The workshop was educational and active and included plays, group discussions and lectures. The workshop was held from June26th to the 28th at The Next Level at English Rose.

Approximately 125 5th & 6th Formers of the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School (ALHCS) were admonished to be prudent in making choices that would positively impact their lives, the economy of the island and by far the world. The students were at the time attending the 3rd Annual School Leavers Seminar at Chandeliers on June 27 and 28.

The Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School now has a state-of-the-art photocopier, thanks to the generous donation of the machine by Haskins Ltd, Agents for Tropical Shipping. It is a Cannon Image Runner 6570 that was purchased at a cost of US$26,000.00.

Manager of Anguilla’s Culinary Team Wilbert Fleming, has given a comprehensive presentation about cooking in Anguilla.
Speaking at the opening of The Taste of The Caribbean Culinary Competition at the Hyatt Regency in Miami on Monday June 26, Mr. Fleming had this to say: “The Anguilla Culinary Experience is a unique appetising blend of flavours, aromas, tastes and cooking techniques that was brought to us by our African, Amerindian and European Ancestry.

“Styling and profiling,” as one person described his actions, Anguillian Lavon Richardson prepared three drinks in record time at the Taste of the Caribbean Bartender Competition held at the Hyatt Regency in Miami on Monday and Tuesday, July 26 and 27.

On Sunday June 25th, some 18 members of the Soroptimist Club in Anguilla went to St. Martin for Friendship Day with the St Martin Soroptimist Club. Travelling on the De Luxe ferry captained by Joe Davis, the group was met in St Martin by members of the club there.

Chief Minister, the Honourable Osbourne B. Fleming, wishes to remind the general public that in keeping with the spirit of Disaster Preparedness for the 2006 Hurricane Season, and more so the need for sound Environmental Management as well as maintaining healthy productive ecosystems, that the Government of Anguilla will further its programme of mitigation against injury and property loss by removing all derelict vehicles in an island wide campaign. The Music Department of the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School has received a number of musical instruments from the Anguilla Development Board (ADB). The instruments were presented to the school on Tuesday June 20.

Police in Anguilla are trying to trace the person or persons responsible for cultivating a large amount of cannabis in the bush area at Swing High, South Hill. This is after the Drugs and Firearms Task Force recovered in excess of 100 mature plants growing in pots.
