Friday this week sees the blessing and official opening of the new offices for the Community College Development Unit of the Ministry of Education, now located in Rogers’ Office Complex at George Hill, next to Cable TV.

Keithley Lake is the new President of the Anguilla Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACOCI). He was elected by the Directors who were chosen at the annual general meeting last week. The Honourable Minister of Social Development Evans Mcniel Rogers today commended Darren Gumbs, an Anguillian, for his outstanding accomplishments in Bodybuilding. Mr. Rogers met Mr. Gumbs and his United States Sponsor in the VIP Lounge at the Wallblake Airport on their arrival today.

Inspector Paul Sinclair told local reporters on Wednesday that three persons in the George Hill area were arrested by the Police Task Force, and other police officers, on intelligence reports they received.

Ms Beverley Labedie, the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank’s Economist assigned to Anguilla, says that according to statistics the island is doing well. “The figures show that it has a double digit growth,” she felt at liberty to say during an interview with The Anguillian.

Thirty models in Anguilla have been featured in what has been described as “the first ever DA Style Swimsuit Calendar” to be launched on the island. The small fashion/modelling agency was founded by Dominican national and beauty queen contestant, Natasha Chasseau, a resident in Anguilla, in partnership with Anguillian Kirthly Richardson. The Anguilla Police, already investigating a case at South Hill in which a business couple were robbed of US$600 on Tuesday, January 29, found themselves faced with another robbery the same week on Thursday, January 31.

As from 2009 the first payments will be made to qualified contributors to the Public Service Pension Fund in Anguilla. At present all public service pensions are paid directly from the Government’s Consolidated Fund, a longstanding system now about to be changed.

More than fifty students from the Comprehensive Learning Centre (CLC) received certificates and awards at a ceremony at the Teachers’ Resource Centre on Sunday evening, February 3. Managing Director and founder of the CLC, Sandra York-Gumbs, spoke of the achievements of the students during the past two years and the excellent results in the overseas examinations. She thanked the many sponsors and businesses who assist the Centre.

On Wednesday, 30th January 2008, advanced surgical procedures were introduced to the Health Authority of Anguilla by Randall (Randy) S. Zuckerman, MD, FACS from Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, New York, USA. Mr Tom Wright, Project Coordinator for the Bassett Hospital Anguilla Partnership provided a brief historical perspective followed by Dr Zuckerman who gave a presentation on laparoscopic surgery to the HAA Board of Directors, Chief Executive Officer, Director of Medical Services, Director of Nursing Services and Medical/Nursing Staff. The presentation took place at the Paradise Cove Resort Conference Room in West End.

Cap Juluca hosted a gala Appreciation Awards Dinner, last Wednesday in honour of twenty five (25) Original Julucans as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations. The honourees: Albert Connor, Gwendolyn Griffith, Wayne Romney, Uton Rogers, Lidian Richardson, Rhona Richardson, Wilson Fleming Christabell Connor, Deborah Romney, Gwenda Connor, Marilyn Connor, Perlette Herbert, Caryl Maynard, Rosalyn Lewis, Dorothy Brooks, Dones Connor, Marcea Richardson-Forbes, Helene Blake, Anthony Carty, Delvin Carty, Rosemary Gumbs, Carlisle Richardson, Julienne Lake, Condon Proctor and Patricia Bryan have been working at the resort since the opening of the first three villas in 1988. Included in the 25 were seven members of staff Albert, Gwendolyn, Wayne, Uton, Lidian, Rhona and Wilson who started out at Pimms Restaurant in 1987, prior to the opening of the resort.
