The newly-elected Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Anguilla for 2006/2007 may be in a position to serve the organisation and the island better. This is because the majority of them will be able to draw from their past experience having functioned in similar capacities during the past rotary year.

Just six months away from the accreditation of the health services, the Health Authority of Anguilla has been told to pursue the next level now that it has made so much progress.

On Wednesday and Thursday this week, Anguilla hosted the Third Meeting of the Steering Committee with responsibility for setting policy, approving the annual work and implementing programmes under the Overseas Countries and Territories Strategic Planning Project.

An Anguilla Government pier development contract awarded to Eghill & Associates of Barbados has begun at Road Bay and thereafter will continue at Blowing Point. The combined project involves an expenditure of three million US dollars being provided from local capital funds.

Anguilla’s Chief Minister, Osbourne Fleming, underwent kidney surgery on Wednesday, July 19, at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida.

Officers from Royal Anguilla Police Service CID, Criminal Intelligence Dept and Drugs and Guns Taskforce undertook a large scale joint search operation, with colleagues from Anguilla Customs Department, on Tuesday afternoon at Road Bay Port. They were joined by a number officers from the British Virgin Islands Customs, including their drugs dog team, which was flown in to provide extra staff to assist with the search.

The Royal Anguilla Police Force has reported that further operations involving the Drugs & Firearms Task Force and CID, assisted by the Dutch St. Maarten Police Helicopter, had resulted in the discovery of a quantity of cannabis. Later, the police also seized a firearm and ammunition.

The 2006 Boys’ Brigade Eastern and Southern Regional Camp began in Anguilla over the weekend with two parades and a formal opening ceremony. The camp attracted some fifty participants from Tobago, St. Kitts, Antigua, St. Martin/St. Maarten and Anguilla. It commenced shortly after the Regional Fellowship Meeting held at Masara Resort at Katouche.

A Letter of Agreement has been signed between the Health Authority of Anguilla and the Pan American Health Organisation involving a grant of ten thousand US dollars. PAHO’s Regional Adviser for Hospital Administration, David Taylor, said the money was mainly to support the activities of the Authority relating to the accreditation of the health services from now to December when the process will be completed.

Chairman of the Anguilla Tourist Board and of the Anguilla Summer Festival, John Benjamin, says that Anguillian artistes, particularly Bankie Banks, have always been receiving significant local assistance for their shows.

Mr. Konnie Richardson of West End received US$5,000 from the Blanchard’s Boys to help defray medical expenses resulting from injuries suffered in a car accident a few months ago. He had to be flown to Trinidad for medical attention.

Two Anguillians were elected to the Board of Directors of a regional financial institution recently. Mr. Timothy Hodge, Director of Social Security, and Mr. Ralph Hodge, a Director of the National Bank of Anguilla, were elected to the Board of Directors of the Eastern Caribbean Home Mortgage Bank at its 11th Annual General Meeting held in Grenada on July 14th.

Following his arrival in Anguilla on Friday, July 7, newly-appointed Governor, His Excellency Andrew George, was sworn in on Monday, July 10, at the Atlin Harrigan OBE Parliamentary Building. The oaths were administered by High Court Judge Justice Janice George-Creque after Attorney General Ronald Scipio read the instruments of appointment.

The Hon. Stanley Everton Reid, the first Anguillian Deputy Governor, says he is looking forward to receiving a high level of support from the various sectors of the society as he embarks on his “new voyage of service to the people of Anguilla.”
He made the statement on Tuesday, July 10, shortly after been sworn in by Governor Andrew George at the Governor’s Office at Old Ta.

Anguilla’s Chief Minister is to have a kidney transplant next Wednesday, July 19, in the United States following many tests and treatments over the past year. This was announced in a Government press release from his office dated July 11, 2006.

The Leeward Islands Calypso Competition, a highlight of the upcoming Summer Festival in Anguilla, has been given a major boost with a donation of US$20,000 from Cable & Wireless, the platinum sponsor.

Now in its 32nd year, the Anguilla Summer Festival 2006 promises to be one of the best such events.

The June Criminal Assizes concluded on 28th June 2006. During the sitting of the High Court, two criminal matters were heard, R v Glen Richardson and R v Lester Fleming.
