TEXT OF A RADIO ADDRESS BY THE SUPERVISOR OF ELECTIONS
 

Fellow Anguillians, it is my duty as Supervisor of Elections to ensure that the elections on Monday 15th February are conducted orderly and fairly. It is my duty to ensure that voters and candidates are conversant with the electoral process and are aware of their rights and of their obligations. It is only through a knowledge of the process, and of those rights and obligations, that elections could proceed smoothly with minimum difficulties and disruptions.

The Sunshine Theatre Company reinstated its Annual Awards Banquet at the Anguilla Great House on February 6, after an absence of three years, because of commitments in the region and in Africa.

The ceremony was chaired by Joyce Kentish-Elan, a longstanding member of the Sunshine Theatre Committee. The first to be awarded was Leroy Richardson (Brother Lee), Senior Environmental Health Officer, musician, song writer, talk show host, cultural worker and Managing Director of Kool FM Radio.

Robert Bradshaw was not the first leader of the workers’ struggle on St. Kitts-Nevis. Before Bradshaw there were working-class champions such as Frederick Solomon, Joseph Nathan, Thomas Manchester, Edgar Challenger, and Charles Halbert. These men had travelled beyond St. Kitts-Nevis and encountered consciousness raising experiences such as Garvey’s Back to Africa Movement, African Nationalism, labor unionism, and radical intellectualism. On their return to St. Kitts-Nevis with their new found education and new ways of seeing the world, it was these men who laid the foundation for radical social transformation in St. Kitts-Nevis.

New Home For The Elderly Opened

A new home offering caring services for the elderly has been officially opened in Anguillla, the third such facility on the island. It is Rose Woods Centre Ltd., located at White Ground, Sandy Hill.

The home, which is to become fully-operational by next month, had its ceremonial opening on Sunday, February 7. The ceremony was attended by a large number of invited guests including residents in the surrounding areas.

Search And Rescue Courses In Anguilla

A series of search and rescue courses are now being held in Anguilla under the theme “so that others may live.” The training resulted from consultations between the Essential Services Sub-Committee of the National Disaster Management Committee and the Department of Disaster Management over the past year.

Dr. DL Murphey and four student doctors from newly established St. James School of Medicine in Anguilla have begun an intensive eight-week research project with the Anguilla World Cup Women’s football team coached by Teacher Collin. With the kind permission of Mr. Gerschard, Dr. Murphey and SJSM student doctors Bayaa, Drake, Milano and Khaimchayev began the Hamstring Stretch Protocol with the World Cup team on Thursday, Feb 4.

It is with deep sorrow and regret that the sudden passing of a husband, father, brother, uncle, godfather and friend, Mr. David Leroy Bryan (also known as Feddie) of Stoney Ground, is announced. He died at the age of 44 years on Sunday 31st January 2010 at 12:15 am at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Anguilla.

Mabel Gumbs Honoured For Contribution To Culture

At 75, Mabel Gumbs, of The Quarter, Anguilla, is one of the oldest nationals continuing a tradition of food culture and arts and crafts which is being handed down, to some extent, to the younger generation and is often celebrated. Her dedicated work has not gone unrecognised, as she has bene the recipient of a number of awards. The latest honour bestowed on her was initiated by the Anguilla Creative Arts Association (ANCAA), of which she has been a longstanding member, in collaboration with the Department of Youth and Culture.
