A Way To Fund Tourism

Hoteliers and other private sector representatives meeting at CuisinArt Resort & Spa on Tuesday November 19 gave their full backing to a new proposal, by the Anguilla Hotel and Tourism Association in collaboration with the Anguilla Tourist Board, whereby sufficient funds could be generated to finance the island’s marketing programme. There were a number of on-the-spot ceremonial cheque presentations following the explanation of the campaign. Under the plan, phase one calls for member properties of the Association to invite their guests to voluntarily contribute one dollar for each night of their stay on Anguilla.

ANGUILLA TO GET NEW FIRE TRUCK
 

The Government of Anguilla is happy to report the rapid response of the British Government to the Chief Minister’s impassioned plea for the provision of a fire truck for Anguilla.
The Honourable Chief Minister made this request to the Minister for the Overseas Territories, Baroness Amos, when he and the Minister of Finance attended the Overseas Territories Consultative Council Meeting in London in late September of this year.

LENNY ROAD WORK TO START JANUARY
 

The resurfacing of six sections of our roads damaged extensively by the flood waters of Hurricane Lenny, is to begin in January next year.

Four of six firms, outside Anguilla, invited to submit bids for the Hurricane Lenny Road Rehabilitation Project, have sent in tenders to carry out the work. The bids were opened on Monday this week at a meeting of the Tenders Board at the Department of Infrastructure.

80 CONGRESS, BUSINESS OFFICALS ENJOY ANGUILLA
 

Eighty members of the US Congress and top business professionals enjoyed a day in Anguilla on Sunday, November 10. They were part of a group of some three hundred members of the ‘Black Caucus’ and private sector representatives who were attending a Carib News conference in nearby St. Maarten.
Chief Minister and Minister of Tourism, Osbourne Fleming, told The Anguillian that the opportunity was taken to invite them to Anguilla. “We thought it would have been nice to invite them to Anguilla and we are happy to have about eighty here,” he said. “These are Congressmen, Congresswomen – Black Caucus people – and entrepreneurs. We feel that they can do a lot for us in our tourism plant

The installation of directional and road signs throughout Anguillla should not be taken for granted. It is an essential part of an information system for visitors in particular, who want to know more about our beautiful island home and find their way around without bothering anyone with questions. It is known that in many cases persons sojourning in Anguilla for extended periods have left the island without fully knowing some roads and places or understanding the sometimes laughable directions given by natives. The reflective signs made by Ron Webster of Island Harbour are not only attractive but are silent messengers, speaking to our visiting friends for all of us in Anguilla.

TEACHERS SURPRISE NEW PRINCIPAL

Some eighty-six teachers at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School took the opportunity of the birthday of newly-appointed Principal, Darwin Hazell, to pledge their full support for him and to tell him to lean on them.

Mr. Hazel, who was serving as Deputy Principal, officially took up his new appointment in November following the departure of Quincy Harrigan who served for two years in the post. Mr. Harrigan has returned to St. Maarten, where he has been teaching for a number of years.

PA SYSTEM FOR BLOWING POINT PORT

A public address system is to be installed at the Blowing Point Passenger Terminal as part of general improvements to one of the island’s gateways for tourists. The equipment was handed over to Port Manager, Dale Rogers, by Director of Tourism, Amelia Vanterpool-Kubisch on Tuesday November 5.
In making the presentation, on behalf of the Tourist Board, she said the equipment was provided to enhance the ferry terminal for Anguillians and visitors. She was grateful to Mr. Rogers for his work and to members of the Board who had contributed their monthly stipend towards the purchase of the equipment.

Albert Lake’s newly-built Wholesale and Market Place on the Stoney Ground Road, was officially opened on Wednesday, November 6, the birthday of his wife, Mrs. Octavia Lake. It was a very brief and simple ceremony during which Pastor Cecil Richardson of the Central Baptist Church at Rey Hill said a prayer, following which Mrs. Lake cut the ribbon to the main entrance door in the presence of members of staff and some of her children.

Rotarians and other persons in Anguilla have had an opportunity to hear some of the pros and cons about timeshare which is attracting some debate on the island. The occasion was a dinner presentation at Cocoloba Beach Resort on October 31 at which Jim Rosen, President of the Rotary Club of St. Maarten and Past President of the Time Share Association there, was the guest speaker.

The Launch of Tranquility Jazz Festival has been enhanced by the contribution of US$5,000.00 from the Social Security Board. The funds, which will be used to help defray travel and production costs associated with the Launch, were presented to Chairman of the Tranquility Jazz Festival Committee, Mr Fitzroy Tomlinson in a brief handing-over ceremony at the offices of the Anguilla Social Security Board.
