The interim report for the establishment of a Health Authority in Anguilla was presented to the Minister of Social Development, Eric Reid, on Monday December 2. The presentation was made by Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks, Chairperson of the Health Authority Project Board set up at the request of the Government almost two years ago.

Anguilla recorded a tragic road accident just after midnight on Monday December 2, when 20-year-old Sigmund Carty of Roaches Hill, in the Valley area, fell from a pickup, travelling to the east just beyond the road junction to Long Bay, and died on the spot.

When Nasser Hussain left Heathrow with the England team for the ill-fated Ashes tour, he said he genuinely believed his side stood a chance of competing with the Australians. However, he did qualify that optimism with a couple of phases that may now haunt him. “For us to beat Australia a few things have to go right on and off the field,” he said. “If we can get the bowlers fit I think we’ve got a really good chance.”

Scotiabank launched a Kiddy Cricket programme for the seven primary schools in Anguilla on Monday this week as part of a regional undertaking.
The Bank’s Managing Director in Anguilla, Walter MacCalman, sent Andrew Niles, one of the Credit Officers, to Barbados recently to familiarise himself with the programme and to coordinate the arrangements for its introduction in Anguilla. The initiative was developed by Scotiabank in collaboration with the West Indies Cricket Board of Control. |

The Optimist Club in Anguilla made a significant impact on the minds of school children and adults across the island by its leadership role in spreading awareness about the killer disease HIV/AIDS.
On Friday November 29, two days prior to World AIDS Day, the Optimist Club led hundreds of children dressed in T-shirts, bearing the slogan “Where awareness makes a difference,” on a march from the grounds of the General Post Office to the Webster Park.

We occasionally hear about certain unlawful acts in some parts of the world in reaction to incidents which have an emotional effect on persons for one reason or another. For instance, a soccer match lost by one team may erupt into an uncalled for demonstration, rampage or even worse scenarios orchestrated by disappointed or aggrieved supporters. While their disappointment may be understood, this does not give them a license to break the law and thus become liable to prosecution for committing an offence. |

NBA OPENS CORPORATE BUILDING

The National Bank of Anguilla Ltd. officially opened its Corporate Building or Annex on November 21 with a promise of substantially increasing its services to the people of the island. The completion of the new building came 18 months after the Bank celebrated its 15th Anniversary on March 23, 2000 and is a fulfillment of a promise made at that time.

Tourism Week 2002 got off to a start on Sunday November 17 with a Thanksgiving Service in the garden of Paradise Cove, a locally-owned resort on the south-west coast of the island. It was the first such type of service conducted on a hotel premises organised jointly by the Anguilla Tourist Board and the Anguilla Hotel and Tourism Association.

Presentation of Awards
The observance of Tourism Week 2002 in Anguilla continued with a presentation of awards ceremony at Coccoloba Resort on Monday, November 18, with the Special Assistant in the Ministry of Tourism, Donna Banks, chairing the proceedings. In her introductory remarks she observed that the best of Anguilla was being celebrated. Included in the list were the island’s friendly people, beaches, cuisine, culture, athletes, environment, accommodation facilities and taxi-drivers.
