The traditional story about a grandfather’s clock ticking non-stop for 90 years may be applied to Helena Richardson (Nancy) of North Valley, Anguilla.

Some people called it a birthday party with a difference as they took into account four particular features: the delightful venue at Smokey’s on the beach at Rendezvous; the milling crowd from all walks of life; the lavish spread of tasty food and refreshment; and the grand finale, the amusing performance of a “fire-eater” who jigged up on broken bottles and what appeared to be razor sharp nails.

A dentist, who served in Anguilla during the early period of the Anguilla Revolution in 1968, and helped to develop the dental services as a labour of love, says the island continues to be part of his heart.

Mrs. Anna Hodge of Cauls Pond Road, Stoney Ground, is one of those Anguillians who are blessed with a long life and have had the good fortune to see the island move from its traditional trappings into a modern society.

Former Anguillian educator, Hubert Ashton Gumbs, was laid to rest in St. Mary’s Anglican Churchyard Cemetery following a Thanksgiving Service on Tuesday afternoon, August 1. He died at the Princess Alexandra Hospital on July 21. He would have celebrated his 74th birthday on September 11.

Sherrilyn Hodge is the owner and Managing Director of the recently registered company Executive Corporate Services Inc. Sherrilyn started her career as a Clerical Officer in the Public Service at the age of sixteen.

Rudy Webster, National Bank of Anguilla’s first recipient of J Vanier Hodge and James N Beard Scholarship has graduated with a joint Bachelor of Arts from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He majored in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics. Rudy graduated Cum Laude having maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.68. He was inducted into the Golden Key International Honour Society in 2005.

The family and friends of Itasha Webster would like to congratulate her on her big achievement. Itasha has completed her studies in Early Childhood Education with 34 college credits. Itasha was recognised for her outstanding achievement and was placed on the Dean’s Honourable Mention List in Fall 2002 and then in Fall 2004 and 2005.

Eric Hughes, CEO of Norric Enterprises, LLC, a billiards export and tournament marketing specialist, has given a presentation on pocket billiards at a meeting at the Teachers’ Resource Centre.

Another stalwart of the Anguilla Revolution has fallen. The following extract from the book ANGUILLA’S BATTLE FOR FREEDOM, 1967, which I co-authored with Nat Hodge, is my way of keeping Slim’s life in the memory of our people.

The death has been announced of Anguillian leading female entrepreneur and community worker, Alecia Ballin.

Local Journalist and community worker, Brenda Carty, has been appointed a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Queen Elizabeth The Second. The community service award was announced by the Governor’s Office in Anguilla over the past weekend following the celebration of the Queen’s Official Birthday.

When Norris Edwards was admitted to the Miriam Gumbs Senior Citizens Home on November 5, 2003, he brought a certain attraction to the well-kept institution. Visitors were taken up with him as he looked at them in silence with twinkling eyes and appeared to be someone of much standing.

The family of the late Zura Ellen Rogers wish to thank all those persons who shared in the loss of their loved one and demonstrated this through telephone calls, visits, flowers, cards or in any other gesture which helped them during the sad days.

The latter part of the twentieth century must be regarded as a pivotal period in Anguilla’s development. This era saw the emerging of a fledgeling economy which by the 1990’s had evolved into a vibrant and sound entity, the phenomenal growth of which continues to command regional and international attention.

A brilliant Anguillian forensic science student, Takoma Carty, is gaining much academic success in England and has been the subject of a feature article in a leading British magazine, Prospects.

Family members residing in Anguilla and abroad joined their matriarch, Melvina Webster, in celebrating her 99th birthday on Saturday, March 25.

Family and friends joined on Tuesday, March 28, in wishing Maurice Connor of South Hill a happy birthday.

I always used to say when a man carries a woman to the altar they make a pledge and this pledge is ‘for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness or in health, till death do us part.’ So whatever comes my way, I take it. I forgive and I forget. I believe that is what made our marriage last so long and I am a Christian woman.”
