On Saturday 17th March 2007 the Ronald Webster Park Annex was a-buzz when the CCB AFFL football league kicked off with the exciting 4V4 competition. Youngsters were in dominant form as they won both the senior and the junior competitions. Super Stars and Shinning Stars placed second and third respectively in the seniors while Shining Stars and Super Stars placed second and third respectively in the Juniors.

The late Ann Leanora Bryan, who passed from this life last week, was one of Anguilla’s proud daughters. She was a well-respected, beloved and hard-working person – the type of role model on which the island’s cherished family values were built in earlier years.

It is with profound sadness that we, the Management & Staff of Cap Juluca, note the sudden passing of an exemplary member of our Juluca Family. Doulless “Leta” Richardson joined the Laundry Team in the Housekeeping Department in June of 2005.

A large crowd of villagers from North Hill and other areas of the island attended the birthday celebration of Anguilla’s grand old man, Christopher (Kit) Richardson, who turned 101 on Monday, March 12.

More than twenty members of the Anguilla Craft Group gathered recently at the Carmichael home at Sea Feathers Bay to celebrate the 85th birthday of long time member, Marie Hofland.

Mr Andrew Gumbs of Blowing Point, Anguilla, recently obtained a Masters Degree with commendations in Audit Management and Consultancy from the University of Central England (UCE) Birmingham, on Tuesday 6th February 2007.

There he lay on his bed terminally ill and in pain during one of my frequent visits but the glow, pleasantness and peace that characterised his thinning face overwhelmed me.

With the passing of Harold Henry Hodge of East End, Anguilla has lost a great patriot and loving citizen. His memory will live on for a long time in the hearts and minds of family, friends and all others who knew and admired him.

Recently-retired British Army General, Mike Jackson, who served in Anguilla as a young Captain and part of the 1969 invasion force, was back on the island this week after 38 years, as we put in place our plans for the celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the 1967 Anguilla Revolution.

Ms. Marissa Rey of The Quarter, Anguilla, recently graduated from the State University of New York at Cobleskill with an A.A.S. in Accounting and a B.B.A in Financial Services. Ms. Rey’s high academic performance during her tenure at SUNY Cobleskill led to enrollment on the Dean’s List from Spring 2004 to Fall 2006. While managing to maintain a high academic standing, Ms. Rey became actively involved outside of the classroom.

This year marks two important anniversaries in the history of Anguilla relating to the life and work of the island’s revolutionary leader, James Ronald Webster. One is the 25th Anniversary of Social Security which he founded and the other is the 40th Anniversary of the Anguilla Revolution which he led.

An Anguillian law student studying in the United Kingdom has attained a landmark of academic excellence. Mrs Menesa Hodge-Richardson was recently awarded a Master of Laws Degree (LLM) in Corporate and Business Law by the University of Central England located in Birmingham, England.

Opportunities for young Anguillians to undertake tertiary education have increased significantly in recent years. Many young people are taking advantage of these opportunities to pursue bachelors and advanced degrees, as well as other higher education certification in diverse areas of study.

Three Anguillians were among more than 1,400 students who graduated from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, over the past weekend.

Mrs Ethne Richardson, a Certified Graduate Teacher of Business at the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School, has successfully completed a two-year Masters degree in Business Administration, Public Sector Management, at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus. She was among 1400 students who graduated over the weekend of October 28.

A United Kingdom national has taken up the post of Marine Biologist at the Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources in Anguilla. He is Stuart Wynne who succeeds James Gumbs, who now holds the appointment of Director.

An Anguillian young lady, Gracelyn Hodge, has excelled in the United States where she is a partner of Ernst & Young, LLP. She was promoted as a partner of the company with effect from July 2006.

Special mention was made of Elected Member for Road South, the Hon. Hubert Hughes, during the Thanksgiving Service for Chief Minister, Hon. Osbourne Fleming, on October 15 at Bethel Methodist Church.

An Anguillian woman, who achieved a top position in the United States Navy, has gone into retirement after 27 years of excellent service.

Brianna Harrigan, now three years old, is making steady strides with her legal guardians doing everything possible to chart a good and enduring future for her.
