TAE KWON DO EXAMS IN ANGUILLA

International Tae-kwon-Do Federation (ITF) Instructor, Claude Chin, was in Anguilla last week to conduct the examinations for members of the local chapter of the ITF. AXA ITF Taekwon-Do Club Instructor and Anguilla’s official ITF representative, Gregory Permuy, was promoted to second degree black belt (2nd Dan). The exams were also successfully completed by Disa Billington, Robert MacClean and Michael Permuy. The exams held at the conference Room of Malliouhana Resort & Spar, included patterns, breaking, sparring and a test of their general knowledge of the art.

SHARA PROCTOR WINS MEDAL

Anguilla was represented at the just completed CARIFTA Games held in Trinidad and Tobago by Khalid Brooks, Shara Proctor, Curlee Gumbs and Coach Wilma Proctor. CARIFTA Games are the premier track and field championships for young athletes in the Caribbean. They were held at the Haseley Grant Stadium in Port of Spain from 19th - 22nd April.

Several years ago, I can well remember the call to international cricketing duty of a diminutive, frail-looking and shy Guyanese teenager. His name was Shivnarine Chanderpaul. As the timid youngster’s name hit the headlines, media interviews were conducted amongst his fellow cricketers, relatives and friends and those who had generally been associated with him in cricket circles. Though many West Indians throughout the region had been surprised by Chanderpaul’s sudden elevation to the squad of the elite, there was a common denominator amongst all those who had been close to him, in and around Guyana cricket, and that denominator was that NONE of them had been surprised at his selection.

Carib Beer Cricket Series Gets Underway This Weekend

As cricket followers from Anguilla and neighbouring islands will head to the beautiful Ronald Webster Park in The Valley this Friday to witness the Leeward Islands Round One encounter with four-day champions, Jamaica, it has been learned that this year’s overseas team India “A” scheduled to participate in the new Carib Beer Cricket Series will not arrive in the Caribbean until February 5th, and will thus miss their First Round match against the West Indies “B” in Barbados.

A Teachers’ Resource Manual, part of the Scotiabank-sponsored Kiddy Cricket Programme, was presented on Tuesday March 11 to the seven primary schools on the island by Managing Director of Scotiabank (Anguilla) Limited, Walter MacCalman. The Chief Cricket Development Officer with the West Indies Cricket Board, Dr. Michael Seepersaud, was in Anguilla for the presentation and launching of the manual.
